Our Mission

The Toronto Triggerfish Water Polo club is a group of people who come together to learn and play the exciting and demanding sport of water polo. We serve Toronto's 2SLGBTQ+ and allied communities, including but not limited to persons who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender, transsexual, queer, questioning, intersex, pansexual, two-spirit, asexual, non-binary and/or genderfluid. Toronto Triggerfish Water Polo operates as a business unit of the Downtown Aquatics Corporation (DAC) and is registered with Ontario Water Polo (OWP), and Water Polo Canada (WPC).

The Toronto Triggerfish Water Polo club’s mission is to bring the sport of water polo to Toronto’s 2SLGBTQ+ and allied communities, and to promote personal development in sport, through athletic participation, volunteerism, community activities, and sports leadership that is inclusive.

Women, Trans, & Non-Binary (WTN)

Historically, as part of the Triggerfish's commitment to Diversity, Equity & Inclusion, we had a mission dedicated to "Women" to promote the representation and inclusion of "female-identified" athletes in water polo.

We have since sought to meaningfully expand this mission by carving space and encouraging participation from all non-cis male identities--which currently make up the majority of our membership. This is where WTN was born. We began with a renaming to explicitly acknowledge the many identities included in our mission.

Each month we hold a WTN practice for these members on an opt-in basis (all level inclusive) led by Coach Kirsten. This practice gives our athletes the opportunity to train as a team and connect with other members throughout the levels while using smaller equipment as needed. These members are additionally represented on our executive by the WTN liaison.

To encourage equity in participation, we offer full body bathing suit options at a subsidized rate to match the price of the briefs worn by most cis-male athletes.

We also offer opportunities for our WTN members to participate as a team both at our Polopalooza tournament and those offered by allied organizations. The Triggerfish is eager to push boundaries in this regard. Most recently, in 2022, our WTN team came away from the UofT Fall Classic undefeated!

Our WTN members are an essential part of our club's culture and community. The Triggerfish will continue to connect our membership through practices, socials and playing opportunities and to connect to our larger community through outreach and promotion.
